Amplified Show Guest Guide

About the amplified radio show

We know that often enough there’s a gap between an individual’s true capability  and how others perceive them. This gap often holds brilliant people back. They may be doing excellent work but somehow, they’re not getting the recognition, opportunities, or clients they deserve.

Many accomplished professionals, including business owners, hesitate around visibility because of its association with self-promotion. So they rely on performance alone. My work will speak for itself, they say.

But success also depends on visibility. Not self-promotion but strategic positioning. Knowing how to show up, speak up, and be recognised for the work you do.

On Amplified, I speak with entrepreneurs to uncover the real story behind their visibility and growth — what’s worked and what hasn’t.

The audience

2XXfm is Canberra’s longest-running community radio station and offers a diverse mix of local music, entertainment, current affairs, and multicultural programming.

Community radio listeners tune in to get local information and news, to hear music not often available on other radio stations, and because they may like local personalities and voices.

how to prepare

Interview Call Duration
This is a 30 minute show including introductions, station ID* and some music. Please allow for 30 – 40 minutes for us to record, with the buffer to enable tech checks and a brief hello.

Enhancing Call Quality
By default, our interviews will occur online unless we’ve agreed to do it in the studio. As such, it’s important to have an optimal setup for the call to ensure it meets broadcast standards. This includes ensuring the following:

  • you are in a quiet environment with minimal noise and distraction throughout the call
  • phones are on silent or vibrate mode throughout
  • you have access to a good microphone if possible
  • webcam is useful but not mandatory as we will do our call on video through Zoom
  • minimise other sounds such as paper shuffling and if using a lapel mic, ensure it’s not rubbing on fabric
  • please join our call from a desktop or laptop rather than a phone or tablet

How to Stand Out

The best answers usually come from specific moments or stories. So feel free to share those and listeners will connect with this far more.

Reviewing Questions
You’re encouraged to not present material or deliver a script. Reviewing the questions beforehand and making a few short notes can help.

Keep the Listener in Mind
Due to our limited time, I may occasionally jump in or move us along to keep the conversation flowing.

Overarching Goal
My priority is to create something valuable for listeners who are giving us their time. I want them to feel heard and seen through the stories we share. It is, therefore, important that we talk candidly about our experiences, our thoughts and feelings.

Through your story, I’d like them to see that it’s very possible for them to embark on their own strategies and journeys and even be motivated or encouraged by your sharing. Our stories are primarily to serve other entrepreneurs and those exploring side gigs, whether they are fully-fledged entities, in start-up mode, or at the idea stage.

The Final Audio File
To accommodate the 30 minute slot, edits will be made to the audio file.

QUESTIONS

These are examples of questions I may ask and no preparation is needed. Treat this as a guide only.

  • Can you share briefly about the business you started and where things are at this point in time?
  • Has building your profile been a conscious strategy or something that has occurred organically?
  • How do you maintain relationships over time?
  • What do you think actually builds credibility versus what people think builds credibility?
  • What fears did you have about putting yourself out there?

a few guidelines

No Promotions or Advertising Please

As Amplified airs on community radio, we need to follow the Community Broadcasting Codes of Practice. This means that we can’t include direct promotion of services or products during the interview. Please avoid mentioning products or services, websites, URL links or social media handles. You’re welcome to talk about your work, your experiences and your business — just without direct promotional references.

Bullet Points over Scripts
We want this to feel like a conversation. If you have some ideas about things you would like to share, make notes of several bullet points to capture your ideas.

Editorial Discretion
Participation in this interview does not guarantee publication or broadcast. The decision to publish, edit, or withhold the interview remains solely at the discretion of the producer.

An interview tip

The best interviews are conversational. Short, thoughtful answers that include stories and examples provide context and resonate with listeners.

After the interview

After the show airs and once available, I will share the audio recording with you so you can listen and share with your network.

sharing the interview

If you enjoy the conversation, you’re very welcome to share the interview with your community once it airs.

*station ID (also called network ID or bumper) is the practice of radio stations identifying themselves on-air, typically using their call sign. It’s done regularly by the announcer during a program and between programs.
