The Visibility Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
Written by Rowena Morais
I have this conversation more often than you’d think. It usually starts the same way.
Amy: So, what does positioning mean in a professional context? It sounds to me like I’ve got to go out there, pound the pavement and talk about myself a lot. Feels exhausting, and frankly, I don’t want to do it.
Rowena: I’ve built a digital presence that helps others understand me the way I see myself.
Amy: But I don’t want to talk about what I’m working on.
Rowena: Ok, I get that. But how would someone who doesn’t know you find your work then?
Amy: They can look at my work. I think my work can speak for me.
Rowena: But where is this work? Do you have a website?
Amy: I’ve done up my LinkedIn profile, but honestly, with so much going on with the business, I’ve just left it to the side.
Rowena: So if your work can speak for you, don’t you think it needs to be out there?
Amy: I guess I’d rather have these discussions one-on-one.
Rowena: I know my work, I know my value. But others — well, they see what they see and it can feel disjointed. So I want to help them to see my work the way I do.
Amy: I don’t have the time though.
Rowena: Is it time or something else, you think?
Amy: I guess you could say I don’t feel confident to do this. It feels too big an ask.
Rowena: It doesn’t have to be, you know.
Amy: What do you mean?
Rowena: Just work out what you really feel and where this sits in the scheme of things. As in, what do you want and how badly do you want it? Is doing this going to help you be seen the way you want to be seen, right?
Amy: I know, I know. There’s resistance, I can feel it. I’m just not sure.
Rowena: No one ever is but you’ve got to trust yourself.
Amy: I just don’t know if I’m taking on more than I should.
Rowena: I get that, I’ve been there. How about this – instead of wondering about the worst that could happen, why don’t you also allow yourself to wonder about the most exciting thing that could happen if you did?
Amy’s resistance is not unusual. Most of us feel this way. It’s not a question of being ready. It’s about exploring what becomes possible when you decide to begin anyway.
Just start.
